CNN's Anderson Cooper addresses the current deluge of fundamentalist Christian pastors who are calling for the extermination of gays and lesbians. Cooper asks Biblical scholar and bestselling author Bruce Feiler why conservative ministers express such hatred for their LGBT neighbors.
Needless to say, it all boils down to cherry-picking scripture and playing to the pits.
“Nothing optional—from homosexuality to adultery—is ever made punishable unless those who do the prohibiting (and exact the fierce punishments) have a repressed desire to participate. As Shakespeare put it in King Lear, the policeman who lashes the whore has a hot need to use her for the very offense for which he plies the lash.” - Christopher Hitchens
“Everyone loves a witch hunt as long as it's someone else's witch being hunted.” - Walter Kern
Jesus never mentioned homosexuality. Not once. In the New Testament, sex-obsessed proselytizer Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus) makes a passing reference to it, which, like his many misogynistic admonitions, is subject to misinterpretation) - but of course Paul never actually met Christ in the flesh. He had a "vision" of Jesus.
Most fundamentalists mistakenly think Paul was one of Christ's original twelve disciples. Of course they also believe Noah rounded up "teenage" dinosaurs and stuffed them inside an ark made of gopher wood.
