In a craven attempt to distract voters and summon anti-LGBT Christianists to the polls in 2012, Republican lawmakers in North Carolina are working hard to amend their constitution to forbid same-sex marriages and even civil unions. The Tar Heel State already has its own churlish version of DOMA - but the GOP-controlled legislature is conspiring to put an amendment before so-called "family values voters" who will naturally pass this reprehensible piece of discrimination. In response to conservative pandering on the issue, the vigilant Pam Spaulding at Pam's House Blend has announced plans to investigate each and every representative that signs on to the bill. She is calling on her vast readership to help dish the dirt: What I do know is that if the GOP wants to play hardball on this issue when we already have a state DOMA (and they need to be working on fixing the economic mess the state is in), I say go for it. Game on. We will explore every co-sponsor over the next year. The taxpayers have a right to know:
* How many times have these lawmakers been married?
* Who's breaking the sanctity of their marriage vows?
* Are there closet doors to be kicked open?
* Who's carousing for same-sex encounters at rest stops?
* Who has their hand in the till?
The voters of NC have a right to know, since these elected officials have decided that they have the right to enshrine bigotry into the state constitution on the basis of two consenting adults having any legal relationship approximating marriage, let alone civil marriage.
Blogger Mike Rogers does a superlative job outing public officials who vote against LGBT equality and then hook up for a little man-on-man action on the side - but this is the first time that I've noticed Ms. Spaulding sounding a similar call to arms. I wish MSM outlets followed their lead, and expanded the net to include ALL hypocritical Republican leaders. (Yes, I do realize that would require a big fucking net.)
Although holier-than-thou pole smokers like former Senator Larry Craig, South Carolina's pious lieutenant governor Andre Bauer, and ex-governor Charlie Crist receive varying degrees of media notice, America's religious extremists should be constantly reminded of the string of extramarital affairs by culture warriors such as Mark Sanford, Chris Lee, Chip Pickering, Newt Gingrich, John Ensign, Diaper David Vitter, and, most recently, Speaker of the House John Boehner. It's a drum citizen journalists should never stop beating. Just because some of these prayerful politicians commit adultery with women instead of men doesn't make them any less deceptive. Progressive bloggers with vital insider contacts should focus like a laser beam on wedded lawmakers who break "holy vows of matrimony" while demonizing their gay and lesbian constituents. IMHO.
If anything can sink the S.S. Fundamentalist, it will be icebergs of hypocrisy. (Pictured: House Speaker John Boehner shedding crocodile tears.)
