Hiram Monserrate was booted from the New York State Senate on Feb. 9 after slashing his girlfriend's face with a broken glass and dragging her by the hair through an apartment building (which was caught on surveillance cameras). He subsequently voted to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry, and the LGBT community was quick to point out the hypocrisy of his position. Now the woman-abusing politician has surrounded himself with evangelical church leaders from District 13 (Queens) in order to relaunch his flagging career. Not only that, Monserrate's supporters have been busily handing out hundreds of crude homophobic flyers that portray his opponent as a "gay caballero." Roy Edroso writes on Village Voice: This is not meant as a compliment: The flyer goes on to characterize the "Gill Foundation" (probably meaning Tim Gill's Gill Action Fund or Fight Back NY, which are helping Peralta out) as "a group of mega rich gay fanatics dedicated to destroying our way of life and creating same sex marriage." They left the quotes off "marriage," but you get where they're coming from: Peralta is all homo'd up, and if you vote for him you'll get some of it on you. Monserrate has won many elections in Queens, but now he has to dig for a base. (Where better to start than with a base that already despises gays?)
From the NY Daily News: It's all part of the expelled ex-lawmaker's continued effort to ride an evangelical wave back to his Senate seat in the special election that is being held on March 16. Fernanda Santos writes on the New York Times: Mr. Monserrate is counting on clergy members to galvanize their flocks. He stood surrounded by a dozen pastors on Monday outside the building that houses Mr. Peralta’s Assembly district office on 37th Avenue, near 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, a gathering he called a "coming-of-age moment for a large churchgoing community that is now understanding how to be politically active."
Only in America would a politican that treats females like punching bags find succor from Christian ministers and "family values" advocates whose loathing for LGBT people is so intense they're willing to overlook his violence toward women.

This creep just gets creepier. No big surprise that the fundies are behind him.
