Immediately after three-term Houston Mayor Bill White, a Democrat, announced his bid for governor, state GOP leaders threw together an attack ad called, predictably, "Bill White: Too Liberal For Texas." The video looks like it was created by someone's great-grandpa who's just learned how to use Windows Moviemaker. It features primitive special effects and blaring background music - I kid you not - from over half a century ago. The ad is so simplistic and amateurish, it absolutely begs for Youtuber ridicule. (Don't let the starred rating fool you. As of today, the video had been viewed only 1,602 times, no doubt by Texas Teabaggers taking a break from secessionist meetings.)
The video opens with a clip of White asking voters to "Judge me by my record," after which the candidate's image turns blurry while a slew of standard conservative attacks flash across the screen, all set to the tune of The Great Pretender, a song recorded by The Platters back in 1955. White is accused of supporting "Obamacare," higher taxes, "liberal gun control efforts," and - lest no hot button issue be overlooked - same-sex marriage. It's a haunch of southern sleaze deep-fried in wingnut butter. I imagine the same script would have been used for any Democrat running for governor.
