Love him or loathe him, blogger Mike Rogers has a 100% track record when it comes to outing politicians that fight against gay rights while secretly pursuing same-gender sex. Senator Larry Craig, Reps. Mark Foley, Ed Schrock and David Drier (to name but a few) have all been exposed by Rogers as right-wing hypocrites who rail against LGBT equality but don't mind smoking some pole on the side. Now the gay activist/investigator has added another notch to his belt: The Lieutenant Governor of the Palmetto State.
From Yahoo News: Rogers, whose work outing closeted politicians who vote antigay figures heavily into the documentary Outrage, reports that South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer has reportedly flirted with several gay men, and one source has admitted to having sex with him. (In Rogers' original report, he doesn't say "flirted." He says, "hit on." There's a big difference.) Two former Bauer staffers said the Lt. Governor spent hours alone with young men in hotel rooms on at least three occasions. The staffers also said the men he spent time with were not staff members with no particular reason to spend time with him. Bauer, who is unmarried, told The State newspaper in June that he was not gay. "One word, two letters. 'No.' Let's go ahead and dispel that now," he said in the interview. "Is Andre Bauer gay? That is now the story. We're a long way from where we were a week ago. We have diverted what the real topic should be here: Is the governor capable for carrying on the duties for which he was elected?" (Does Bauer think there can only be one news story at a time?) However, openly gay South Carolina legislator Linda Kentner has been vocal about the secrecy of such gay lawmakers in her state who prefer to keep quiet... like the Lieutenant Governor. "We have more gay people serving in South Carolina than probably in anyplace in the United States - they're just not out of the closet," she said in an interview with Firedoglake.com in May. "We have an awful lot of people in the closet - Lindsey Graham, Glenn McConnell who's our Senate president pro tem, our Lt Governor..." (What is it with South Carolina? Good grief, you could mount a production of Mama Mia! with all the queer pols in that state.)
The LGBT community isn't particularly interested in who politicians schtupp unless those same leaders start actively working against equality. Unlike sexual orientation, running for office is a choice. Public servants who deny rights to gay and lesbian Americans have no business taking their pleasure from the people they malign. And if they do choose to walk that dog to the corner, they better keep their sexuality on a short leash. Otherwise, they will get Roger-ed. (Pictured: Top, Rogers - Bottom, Andre Bauer)

Being gay and against gay marriage isn't hypocrisy. Having gay sex and being against it is a different matter.

It's hypocrisy to deny gays equal rights when he's pretending to be straight and sleeping around with men.

I resent people who get to have cake and eat it too.

Once GLBT people are treated equally under the law, this won't be an isuue. These politician can stay in their closets for the rest of their lives, if that's what they want. But so long as there are people being fired or denied housing because of sexual orientaion, as long as gay couples are treated differently under the law, it IS an issue.

Not unless he gets married to a man he isn't being a hypocrite.

Under the second definition of the word "hypocrite," that may be true. Under the first, Bauer is one... (pasted from dictionary):
1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.
