The four Richmond, California men who gang raped a lesbian and left her naked near a burned-out apartment complex have been arrested and charged with numerous felony counts of sexual assault, kidnapping and robbery. Police have been pursuing the case as a hate crime because of anti-gay insults made by the perps during an attack that lasted forty-five minutes. (Just think about how long it takes for forty-five minutes to pass. Incredible.) From the San Francisco Chronicle: Three suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday, and the fourth suspect, 21-year-old Josue Gonzalez, known by the nickname "Pato," turned himself in Thursday after authorities issued a $1 million arrest warrant, describing him as armed and dangerous, police said. Gonzalez walked into the Richmond police headquarters with his mother, stepfather and girlfriend just 10 minutes after police finished a midday news conference about their pursuit of Gonzalez, authorities said.
Richmond Police Lieutenant Lt. Mark Gagan told reporters that in the wake of the incident community members held vigils, distributed leaflets and made announcements at local churches. He added, "The crime had an immediate effect on our community. Locally people were very afraid to know that these people were out there."
I keep thinking about the loathsome Spanish language Prop 8 commercials that were designed to instill fear and hatred of gays and lesbians in the state's Hispanic voters. You can't demonize an entire community and then pretend to be shocked when something like this happens.

Yes you are right those damn Prop 8 commercials that were designed to instill fear and hatred of gays and lesbians, because people don't have a brain or can't think for themself that something is wrong. Most people have a conscience these animals do not it's the own ignorance that casued these attacks not some commercial.

The writer didn't say that the ads caused the attack. But they DID produce an environment where this sort of thing is more likely to happen. Last century in the south, lynchings started with words.
