David Deming, the right-wing scientist who wrote in September that: "Obama is a vapid demagogue, a hollow man that despises American culture. He is ill-suited to be president of the United States. As the weeks pass, more Americans will come to this realization and elect McCain/Palin in a landslide." became even more detached from reality in December when he assured Washington Times readers that - praise to God! - "the last two years of global cooling have nearly erased 30 years of temperature increases. To the extent that global warming ever existed, it is now officially over."
Conservatives must have exhaled a collective sigh of relief when they read those reassuring words. After all, Deming is a certified geophysicist, right? Never mind that he embraces standard Repug values like opposing affirmative action and gun control, the University of Oklahoma geology professor surely knows about all that climate stuff. Doesn't he?
Today there's an exclusive report on Raw Story that should (but probably won't) give global warming deniers like Deming a reason to rethink their position: New satellite data presented by NASA scientists shows the loss of an estimated 2 trillion tons of ice from Greenland, the Antarctic and the North Poll: proof positive of global warming's dramatic effects, they claimed. "More than half of the loss of landlocked ice in the past five years has occurred in Greenland, based on measurements of ice weight by NASA's GRACE satellite," said NASA geophysicist Scott Luthcke, in a report by the Environmental News Network... A 2007 study by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Georgia Institute of Technology determined that global warming's effect on wind patterns and sea temperatures nearly doubled the number of hurricanes a year in the Atlantic Ocean over the past century... President-elect Obama has said the application of science in the fight against global warming "is key to our survival...
D'oh! Here's another example of David Deming's analytical mind: A University of Oklahoma student, Joni Kletter, wrote in an article for the college newspaper that "easy access to a handgun allows everyone in this country to quickly and easily kill as many random people as they want." Deming responded by saying: "I just want to point out that Kletter's 'easy access' to a vagina enables her to 'quickly and easily' have sex with 'as many random people' as she wants. Her possession of an unregistered vagina also equips her to work as a prostitute and spread venereal diseases. Let's hope Kletter is as responsible with her equipment as most gun owners are with theirs."
That's scientific reasoning only a conservative could love.
