Blackwell The Magic Bigot backed by Wingnuts for RNC Chair
Ben Smith at Politico reports that twenty-four far right conservative luminaries will be supporting former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell for Republican National Committee chairman. This is great news for Dems since it shows (once again) that GOP leaders believe that the way to win future elections is to eschew moderate voters in favor of their narrow religious base: The group, which mixes leading economic conservatives, including Steve Forbes and Pat Toomey, and leading social conservatives, including James Dobson and Tony Perkins, had agreed to endorse and campaign together for a candidate based on a questionnaire assembled by veteran GOP activist Morton Blackwell (no relation). "The conservative endorsers noted that there were other good candidates, but all agreed that Ken Blackwell is the best choice. They intend to contact grassroots conservatives across the country and ask them to urge the three RNC members from each state and U.S. territory to vote for Ken Blackwell for RNC chairman," they said in a press release going out shortly.
Two of the people supporting Blackwell, James Dobson and Tony Perkins, were named on ProPup's list of America's Five Most Intolerant Christians. And two others, Phyllis Schlafly and Colin Hanna, would have made the list if we'd expanded it to ten.
Ken Blackwell is one of the few African-Americans who wasn't offended when RNC chair co-contender Chip Saltsman sent out copies of "Barack the Magic Negro" to his pals on Capitol Hill, dismissing the country's negative reaction as "hypersensitivity in the press." Of course Blackwell, who knows a thing or two about promoting bigotry (he compared LGBT Americans to arsonists), has seen which way the Republican wind blows (right up his ass) and thinks the best way to convince the country that GOPers are inclusive is to place his own intolerant self at the head of the party.
He wants to be their Obama.
