Those tired old homophobes at the American Family Association are starting the New Year off right - right-wing batshit crazy, that is - with a boycott against Campbell's Soup. It seems that the company has committed the unforgivable sin of - gasp! - creating an LGBT inclusive ad and buying space for it in an LGBT publication. The two-page spread for Swanson's Chicken Broth, which shows a lesbian couple and their son gathered in a cozy kitchen setting, was placed in the print edition of The Advocate. The ad contains a brief bio of the family and a recipe for Butternut Squash Bisque.
Oh, the sheer sinfulness of it all! The AFA wasted no time in calling an ACTION ALERT: Campbell's Soup Company has openly begun helping homosexual activists push their agenda. Not only did the ads cost Campbell's a chunk of money, but they also sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support! (Good Christians are supposed to know that LGBT families are unworthy of any support.) They also gave their approval to the entire homosexual agenda! (Got that, folks? The ENTIRE homosexual agenda! Grrr.) True to form, the AFA has been telling its members to make phone calls and send emails to America's Mmm Mmm Good Soup Company and persuade them to join their army of darkness.
But then... then something wondrous occurred: A holiday angel appeared in the guise of Campbell spokesman Anthony Sanzio. Sanzio made it perfectly clear that his company will NOT be dictated to by religious bullies: "Our position on this is pretty straightforward. Inclusion and diversity play an important role in our business, and that fact is reflected in our marketing plan. For more than a century, people from all walks for life have enjoyed Campbell's products, and we will continue to try to communicate in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them. Our plans for the Swanson brand include additional placements in The Advocate." (Compare Campbell's heroic stand to that of McDonalds' execs, who last year caved in to the AFA's high-handed demands.)
I think I'll pop into the kitchen and open a can of Campbell's Soup right now. It's the perfect meal for a wintry afternoon - and a good way to ward off the chill of intolerance. (Hat tip, Right Wing Watch.)

Make that two servings! Dave and I just downed some Campbell's, too.
Great post, Max!

I am pretty much the only anti-AFA Christian I know. I think the people are lying nut jobs. I say, good for Cambells, for sticking to what they believe in. It's important to represent people from all walks of like.

I hope he's wrong, but the cynic inside me is saying that Campbell's were hoping this would happen and more people would switch to their brand in support of their stand against fundies than would be bothered to boycott it.
Also: what's the "homosexual agenda"?
