Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss, the man who says that we can "trust" the folks in the financial community with that $700 billion actually being spent on the bailout, the man who was recently appalled at the number of African-Americans voting in the 2008 election, is now trying through his lawyer to quash a subpoena by Savannah Attorney Mark Tate calling on him to testify in a lawsuit against Imperial Sugar. From WSAV: Tate, who represents families of the deceased, subpoenaed Chambliss because he believes Chambliss has pertinent information for the case... Tate says attorneys for Chambliss claim he has immunity because he's a U.S. Senator. "Our clients have said to reporters that they have felt like he was trying to influence them and dissuade them from filing lawsuits. That's the kind of activity a U.S. Senator does not enjoy privilege to conduct."
There is speculation that Chambliss was enlisted by Imperial Sugar to help the company avoid blame in February's deadly explosion at a Georgia refinery that killed 14 workers. At a July Senate hearing, this "family values" pol castigated a whistleblower who told investigators that the sugar manufacturer ignored repeated warnings about potential dust explosions. Chambliss is currently involved in a runoff race against Democrat Jim Martin of Atlanta. And tired old John McCain, in only his second public appearance since losing the presidential election, has been out stumping for this disreputable Georgia senator, along with Cheshire cat Mike Huckabee. Pass the peas.
