How is this for Christian compassion: Not satisfied with merely enshrining discrimination in their state's constitution, the Florida Family Association is collecting signatures for a charter amendment in Hillsborough County that would preemptively outlaw spending taxpayer dollars on same-sex benefits. It should be mentioned that gay and lesbian families - and yes, this includes the children of same-sex couples - currently receive no benefits in that county. But just in case some misguided mayor or city council member gets any funny ideas about offering anything like, say, health insurance, to LGBT municipal employees and their domestic partners, this mob of Bible-driven fundies want to make sure that option is off the table - permanently. David Caton, executive director of FFA pontificates: ''We're going to use the momentum from the marriage amendment to speak to the fact that most people in this state don't want a recognition of that type of relationship. At this time of economic stress, our government should not be providing benefits to non-employees on the basis of their sexual relationships.''
Does anyone in this country still think that right-wing Christians are only interested in protecting the "sanctity" of their marriages? Well, think again.
