Christian University Apologizes - too little, too late.
Bob Jones University, that bastion of right-wing Christian education and self-righteousness, has issued an unctuous apology for its past discriminatory racial policies: "Like any human institution, we have failures as well. For almost two centuries American Christianity, including BJU in its early stages, was characterized by the segregationist ethos of American culture. Consequently, for far too long, we allowed institutional policies regarding race to be shaped more directly by that ethos than by the principles and precepts of the Scriptures. We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it." Translation: It wasn't really our fault that we discriminated against blacks - it was the fault of American cul-tcha!
What bullshit. The university didn't start accepting African-American students until 1971 - and interracial dating was prohibited until 2000. That's only eight years ago! Far right evangelicals seldom take the lead on civil rights issues (even though they breathlessly claim otherwise). They're dragged kicking and screaming into whatever century they find themselves.
So save your sorrys, BJU. Unless maybe you're ready to re-examine your policy toward gays? Didn't think so. We'll check back with you next century.
