Jonathan Martin at Politico reports that two weeks after the election, conservatives will meet at an undisclosed location in Virginia to discuss ways to salvage the Republican Party. One attendee, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Martin that the secret meeting will consist of the "who's who of conservative leaders - economic, national security and social... There's a sense that the Republican Party is broken, but the conservative movement is not." Here comes the crazy part. Martin writes: Sarah Palin will be a central part of discussion... (And if McCain wins) Palin would be seen as their conduit to power. “She would be the conservative in the White House,” is how the source put it. Should McCain lose next Tuesday, the conversation will include who to groom as the next generation of conservative leaders – a list that will feature Palin at or near the top. In making Calamity Sarah their future shining star, conservative leaders plan to regain a stranglehold on America by tilting their party even further to the right. Rather than reaching out to moderates and independents, which would be the sane approach to healing the GOP's damaged brand, the so-called "party of Lincoln" will ratchet up the socially divisive elements of conservatism that have brought the Republicans to their current sorry state.
This is good news for Democrats, because it indicates that Republicans did not learn any hard lessons from this election cycle. And that really could lead to the death of the GOP. At the very least it will pave the way for a third major party to emerge in American politics. Which is what I believe will - and should - happen. (image courtesy Zina Saunders© 2008)
