Is it possible that Elizabeth Dole's mind has been affected from all those facelifts she's had? (One wag at the Democratic Underground suggested that by now she's got hair on her chest.) But seriously, can too much Botox cause irrational behavior? I can't think of another explanation for Senator Dole's approval of the latest attack ad whipped together by her unhinged staffers. As the TV spot begins, the first image you see is genuinely terrifying - which is only appropriate with Halloween approaching. It's a close-up of Mrs. Dole, skin stretched so tight you could bounce walnuts off her face. "I'm Elizabeth Dole, and I approve this message." Then, with spooky background music and a dark scene that could have been snagged from any slasher flick, a female voice murmers ominously: "A leader of the godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser in Kay Hagan's honor." Following that are macro clips of various "godless Americans" saying things like "There is no God to rely on." and "There was no Jesus." - y'know, stuff to instill fear and outrage in the hearts of all Christian fundamentalists. The commercial's desperate attempts to connect Dole's Democratic opponent with some vague atheist conspiracy is par for the course with today's frantic GOP strategists who no longer even pretend to care about anything as banal as the economy or health care or the war in Iraq.
It should be noted that Democrat Kay Hagan is an elder at the First Presbyterian Church, which won't matter to the wild eyed wingnuts gasping at the ad's scary message. It should also be noted that Hagan is rightfully upset by Dole's attacks on her faith. Her attorneys have prepared a cease-and-desist order demanding that the Dole campaign stop the ad. Update: Huffington Post reports that fresh polling in North Carolina suggests "incumbent GOP Elizabeth Dole has fallen further behind since airing an ad that tried to tie Democratic rival Kay Hagan to atheists."
