And people think the Democrats are spineless?
On cable television, Keith Olbermann has been the single liberal voice out in the wilderness of Hannity, Beck and Scarborough. (Well, now there's two since Rachel Maddow got her own show). But as we've long known, networks have jelly for backbones and NBC is no exception, announcing today:
After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage. The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.
But what's the real story here? Was it Keith's and Chris' little ego-driving squabbles? I don't think so. Keith is one of MSNBC's top-rated on-air personalities and what is cable for if not for squabbling. Oh yeah, the GOP has been complaining that NBC is so mean and unfair to their little Sarah Palin. Yes, that Sarah -- the one who is tough as nails -- moose hunter, hockey mom... you know, the pit bull with lipstick -- except for when it comes to press coverage. When it's the media, Sarah's people cry "the tv guys are picking on me." As I said when Hillary pulled this stunt, you can't have it both ways. You're either tough enough to play in the big leagues or you're not. You don't get to be both whiney at the meanies and a rugged Alaskan she-woman at the same time.
The throngs at the GOP convention were even chanting "NBC" in derision at one point and we know the McCain camp has complained about the network's coverage. As Bloomberg News reported on Sept. 2, "McCain has accused news organizations such as the New York Times, Time magazine and the NBC television network of being unfair to him. The campaign even considered pulling out of one of the three presidential debates because it would be moderated by Tom Brokaw, a former NBC News anchorman."
This is journalism? This is upholding freedom of the press? A venerable network like NBC caves to the silly, immature and unfounded claims of McCain hacks like Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt? This is the oldest Karl Rove ploy in the book and, NBC, you fell for it.
