Who could forget this visual that is widely credited with helping to sink Michael Dukasis' 1988 presidential bid? He looked silly, out of place and out of touch with America and justifiably, he was ridiculed for it. And Daddy GHW Bush (also cutely known in some quarters as "41") was the heckler-in-chief, using the photo in relentless political ads.
Fast forward 20 years. And Republican contender John McCain is having some equally diastrous photo ops. Some would say that the embarassingly clingy hug of George Bush is the most damning picture of the campaign.
Others would vote for the McCain "Market in Baghdad" money shot where he proclaimed how safe the streets of Iraq's capital were without noting that a couple of helicopters and 100 soldiers were guarding him on his little afternnoon stroll.
But, for me, the definitive photo that represents McCain's flailing campaign is this one:

Two very grumpy old men in Poppy Bush's golf cart which is adorned with his own version of "you kids, get off my lawn!" Check out the sign on the cart's windshield: "Property of 41. Hands off!" This on Grampa Bush's Kennebunkport multi-million dollar estate. There are several such golf carts to haul the Bush tribe around in, but this one must have an extra-special cup holder or heated lumbar support seat to make it 41's favorite.
And in teaming up with this nonsense to curry favor with the senior Bush, Senior Citizen McCain looks silly, out of place and out of touch with America and justifiably, he is being ridiculed for it.
