AFA Founder: Culture War Might Be Over
PageOneQ reports that right-wingers might be preparing to admit defeat in the battle over same-sex marriage if California's Proposition 8 goes down in flames: "A recent poll suggests that Californians will reject Proposition 8. 51% polled opposed the measure, with 42% saying they were in favor. 'Starting out behind is usually an ominous sign for a proposition,' Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo noted."
Donald Wildman, founder and chairman of the anti-gay American Family Association, has told columnist Bill Berkowitz: "If we lose California, if they defeat the marriage amendment, I’m afraid that the culture war is over and Christians have lost. I’ve never said that publicly until now—but that’s just the reality of the fact."
Not so, Mr. Wildman. 'Christians' will not have lost the Culture War. Your particular version of Christianity - with all the homophobia and mean-spiritedness that goes with it - will have merely suffered a setback. But don't worry. Legions of unhinged social conservatives will continue to interfere in the lives of LGBT Americans. They'll cast gays and lesbians as demons, sign petitions against companies that refuse to discriminate, and teach their children that intolerance is a virtue. So by all means, keep on spreading the hate. Keep repeating the lies. Future generations will look back on you with pity. Or contempt.
