Right-wing evangelicals who have in recent years grown pompous (and were always mean-spirited) are finding themselves flailing about in uncharted waters. 'The Base' is disintegrating before their very eyes. It's apparent to disinterested observers that many rank-and-file Christians are weary of divisive politics, as espoused by Focus on the Family, Concerned Woman of America, The American Family Association, and a host of others. Public sentiment is turning against the social conservatives' self-righteous - and self appointed - demagogues as bloggers continue to expose their bald hypocrisy and myopic agenda. Which leaves the GOP in an unenviable position. (It was only a matter of time before those chickens came home to roost.)
What to do, what to do. Keep sucking up? Or learn moderation. John McCain, not surprisingly, has chosen the latter course...
From MSNBC: "McCain told conservative leaders that he would speak out more to highlight his pro-life record and views on other social issues to garner more Christian conservative support..." (I don't know what more he can do to assure The Pious and The Goodly. He's already bent over and grabbed his ankles for them.) Read more here.
Time Magazine wonders, Is Dobson's Obama Hit Backfiring? "Obama's willingness to talk about his faith, including his decision to become a Christian as an adult, has resonated even with religious conservatives who disagree with him politically... This language, combined with the Obama campaign's aggressive efforts to reach out to religious voters, has made it hard for the Christian Right to paint Obama as a secular bogeyman." (The article points to a splendid new website, James Dobson Doesn't Speak For Me.) You can read the Time piece here.
So, are we finally seeing the right-wing's own Latter Days? Please God, make it so.
