Failure to Vet

John McCain has canceled a fundraiser that was scheduled at the home of Texas oil magnate Clayton Williams after his campaign was reminded that Williams once compared rape to the weather. "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it," Williams said during his failed 1990 campaign for governor. The late Ann Richards, who won the race, used Clayton's disreputable remarks against him in this scathing TV Spot:

Clayton Williams claims he's already raised $300,000 from people interested in attending the fundraiser. From the Midland Reporter-Telegram: "The former gubernatorial nominee added he has no desire to see Obama’s 'socialist' policies enacted and that all businessmen and entrepreneurs would be negatively affected should the Illinois senator win the White House."

We're surprised that the McCain camp planned a fundraiser with this cretin without vetting him. Are they that desperate for money?
